Lanett
The Lanett High School boys basketball team (13-5) flattened Horseshoe Bend on Wednesday, 114-52, in its final Class 2A, Area 8 game of the regular season.
Panthers head coach Richard Carter confirmed that is the most points, and largest margin of victory, recorded in his seven-year tenure at Lanett.
Seven Panthers reached double figures in the dominant display. Emanuel Littles scored a team-high 22 points, Ty Truitt had 20, Jayshon Burton had 15, and Quae Houston had 13. Anquaevious Pollard, Tifton Dobbs and Kristian Story contributed 11 points apiece.
The Lanett girls (10-4) also picked up a convincing win over Horseshoe Bend, 61-23. Makyia Broughton posted 20 points, and Ambria Jackson had 10.
The Lady Panthers finished area play with a 6-0 record. The Lanett boys finished 5-1. Unbelievably, their lone loss was to Horseshoe Bend in December. Many of the team’s key players were still playing football at the time.
The Lanett girls and boys will both host the area tournaments in February.
Chambers Academy
The Chambers Academy boys basketball team (4-13) beat Sparta Academy on Wednesday, 69-39, in the opening round of the AISA Class A, Region 1 Tournament in Cecil.
The victory secured the Rebels a spot at next week’s state tournament.
Freshman Payton Allen scored a team-high 26 points in the resounding win. He also collected nine rebounds.
Chambers Academy will return to action on Friday against Evangel. The game will help determine seeding for state.
