PRATTVILLE — The Springwood School soccer team drew a tough match in the first round of the AISA state playoffs.
On Monday, the Wildcats traveled to Prattville to face reigning state champion Autauga Academy. The Generals proved too much on their home field and prevailed, 3-1.
Springwood closed its inaugural season with a 5-6 record.
“It was an amazing season. We played extremely well,” Springwood head coach John Lanier said. “All the guys gave all their effort in practice and during the games. Every single game that we played — we won some, we lost some — but even the ones we lost we were right there.”
That was true against Autauga. The Generals took a 2-0 lead early in the game, but Springwood fought back. Coleman Hull netted his 17th goal of the season to cut the deficit in half.
Autauga held a 2-1 advantage at halftime and maintained it until the game’s closing stages, when it added an insurance goal.
“We were right there the whole game,” Lanier said. “I was pretty proud of the guys for sticking in because they got up us on early.”
Springwood punched its ticket to the playoffs by securing wins against Northside Methodist (twice), Emmanuel Christian (twice) and Macon-East Academy. The team will graduate three seniors in Gunnar Hartzog, Henry Smith and Antonio Roberts.
