Mr. George Calvin Rutland — 1926-2019

LANETT — George Calvin Rutland, 92, of Lanett, passed away on May 12, 2019, at Bill Nichols State Veterans Home in Alexander City. George was born Sept. 18, 1926, in Chambers County to the late George Wade and Lenora Wright Rutland.

He was an army veteran serving proudly in World War II in the Asiatic Pacific on Luzon, the Philippines and in the occupation of Japan. George was the owner and operator of R&H Welding and later Rutland’s Welding Supply in West Point, Ga. from 1955-1987. After retiring, he helped others with building projects and enjoyed woodworking. George was a member of Plant City Baptist Church, having been very active in church since 1952. Over the years he served as deacon, Sunday School superintendent, teacher and Training Union director.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife of 54 years, Frances Stroud Rutland; sisters Verbice R. Crumpton and Vivian R. Thompson, brother Perry Rutland, niece Karen C. Lowman and stepdaughter Pam W. Williamson.

George is survived by his wife, Rochelle Williams Rutland of LaGrange; daughters Carol R. (Tom) Bennett of Cary, North Carolina, Arlene R (Leon) Weathers of Lanett; Joan R. (Byrd) Worthy, Lanett and Jane R. (Manuel) Rodriguez of Corpus Christi, Texas; stepdaughter Paula W. (Jerry) Knight of LaGrange and stepson Joey (Janelle) Williams of Galveston, Texas and stepson-in-law Larry Williamson of LaGrange; grandchildren Russell Worthy, Lanett; Meagan Rodriguez (Jeff) Kidneigh of Aransas Pass, Texas and Zachary Bennett of Wilmington, North Carolina; great grandchildren Jazz and Abriannah Worthy of Lanett, and Dane Kidneigh of Aransas Pass, Texas.

The family will receive visitors at Bluffton Funeral Services in Lanett on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at 1 p.m. ET followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. ET also at Bluffton Funeral Services. A graveside service will follow at Marseilles Cemetery in West Point. The Reverends Brad Reed and John Samanie will officiate.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to Plant City Baptist Church, the American Cancer Society, Hospice or a favorite charity.
