Mrs. Mable Whatley Barton — 1920-2019

Mabel Whatley Barton, 98, passed away on Wednesday, May 8, 2019. Mabel was born May 12, 1920, to the late Stella Short and Ralph Jacob Whatley. Prior to the last month of her illness, she called Lakewood Memory Care in Valley her home. She was exceptionally happy there and was very blessed with the wonderful care given her and the friendships she made.

Mabel has been an active member of the West Point Methodist Church, West  Point’s Women’s Club and Garden Club. She worked for many years for the City of Lanett and enjoyed working at Hengsler’s Jewelers in later years. Mabel was a very artistic lady. She loved painting with her beloved art group, gardening, cooking and sewing.  Her family members have pieces of her artwork hanging in their homes and cherish all the wonderful memories.

Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. {Jim) Barton. She is survived by her daughter, Patsy Sparks Gamble, step-daughter, Janice Barton, grandchildren, Christopher (Kristen) Gamble, Michelle, Gamble and Nicole (Michael) Akin, great-grandchildren, Avery and Trent Wagner, Carter and Jaxon Akin, Cole Gamble, Madison and Chad Gamble, Bobbie Roland, sister and Fred (Polly) Whatley, brother and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Mabel led an exceptional life with a gracious and generous heart for her family and friends.

The family extends a loving invitation to celebrate her life with Visitation on Tuesday, May 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. ET at  Bluffton Funeral Services in Lanett with services being held at West Point Methodist Church on  Wednesday,  May 15 at  11:00  a.m. ET Graveside services with follow at  Marseilles Cemetery in West Point, Georgia.

Reverend, John Mattox will officiate.
