LaFAYETTE — The Kids Fishing Rodeo will return to the Chambers County Lake this weekend.

Last summer, 168 children ages 12 and under registered for the event, and this year lake management is expected approximately 200 registrants.

“It’s really nice to see children get out of the house, come out into nature and get off of those phones,” Chambers County Lake manager Ted Craig said. “The kids are going to be fed, and they’re going to have fun.”

Registration for the rodeo begins on-site Saturday morning at 7 a.m.

At approximately 8 a.m., the participants will be able to start fishing and the event will continue until 11:30 a.m. Between 11:30 a.m. and noon, the participants’ fish will be weighed and the winners will be awarded. First and second place will be acknowledged for the biggest fish, and first and second place will be acknowledged for the fish that weigh the most.

Throughout the morning, there will be drawings for registrants to have the opportunity to win prize packages that feature fishing items. After the event, the kids are served a hot dog sack lunch and after eating, the children can choose to go on a hayride.

“There’s no charge for any of it,” Craig said. “No entry fees. It’s all free, all we’re trying to do is get our children out there and try to give back to the community.”

Chambers County Sheriff Sid Lockhart is also scheduled to be in attendance with his food wagon, which is available for all of the adults at the rodeo. Members of the Cusetta Volunteer Fire Department will also be in attendance, and vintage items from the old fire department will be at the rodeo for display.

“I can’t say enough about our volunteers,” Craig said. “We have several volunteers who are helping park, helping kids fish and doing the registration. It’s an orchestrated event.”
