VALLEY — Three Valley Parks & Recreation youth teams received certificates Monday night on the excellent girls’ softball and boys’ baseball seasons they had this year.
During the noon hour on Wednesday, the 9 & 10-year-old boys team will be getting a big sendoff from Valley Community Center as they go to represent Alabama in World Series competition in Lumberton, North Carolina.
Valley’s 9 & 10-year-old All Stars were 10-0 in region, district and state competition. They will be leaving for North Carolina at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday.
“This is the best year we’ve ever had with our youth teams,” Mark Hudmon told the city council Monday night. “We are so proud of them.”
Recognized with certificate presentations were the 7 & 8-year-old and 10 & under girls teams and the 11 & 12-year-old boys team.
The 7 & 8-year olds finished second in the district tournament and fourth in the state in a recent playoff held in Lagoon Park in Montgomery.
The 10-and-under girls won the district tournament and also finished fourth in the state.
The 11 & 12-year-old boys finished second in the state in a tournament held in Headland.
Each of the recognized teams received standing ovations from the mayor and council and attendees at the council meeting.
Mayor Leonard Riley said he was especially proud of what the teams had accomplished this year, adding that his son is a coach for one of the teams, and he has two grandchildren playing.
“Congratulations to all our teams who played so well this year,” said Council Member Marquetta Madden.
Council Member Henry Cooper said he wanted to thank the recreation department and the coaches for the jobs they’d done this year.
“Coaching is such a tough job,” said Council Member Jimmy Gilson. “It’s a job. I know because I was a coach for years and years. They all want to play at the same time, and there’s no way they can do that.”
