LANETT — Two people were seriously injured Wednesday in a one-vehicle accident on Highway 50.
According to Lanett Fire & EMS Chief Johnny Allen, an adult and three children were in an SUV heading toward the Valley from LaFayette when the vehicle ran off the road and into a ditch near Resthaven Memorial Gardens. The accident took place at 3:22 p.m. ET.
Two injured children were taken by ambulance to EAMC-Lanier Hospital in Valley. The adult driver of the vehicle, and the child that was seriously injured were airlifted from just outside the Huguley Fire Department.
A LifeSaver helicopter landed at the HFD and transported the injured child to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham. A second helicopter then landed to airlift the seriously injured adult to UAB.
“It was a really bad accident,” Allen said. “That is a very dangerous section of the highway, and people need to be extra careful when driving there. We have worked several fatalities there in the past few years.”
The accident was worked by Lanett police and the Lanett EMS, Huguley Fire Department, East Alabama Fire Department and the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office.
County deputies were on the scene within minutes of the accident.
