LaFAYETTE — The Chambers County Commission, LaFayette City Council and Lanett City Council were the latest municipalities to read proclamations to help raise money for the Myers family.

Cheryl and Hermon Myers are the founders of the Christian Service Center, which helps families in need throughout the year and even more throughout the holidays. The family has recently been through tragedy with their oldest son, James Myers, suffering a staph infection. The illness has put him in a wheelchair, and the family isn’t sure if he will walk again.

More so, Cheryl Myers has learned she will need back surgery, potentially costing thousands of dollars in medical bills.

Several municipalities have read a proclamation declaring the weekend of Nov. 23 “Miracle for the Myers” weekend, including West Point and Valley.

At the LaFayette meeting Monday, Cristy Myers didn’t say much other than she loves her family and the community. Cristy is the daughter of Cheryl and Hermon Myers.

“It has been a long road to get here,” she said. “We just appreciate the support and the outpouring of love everyone has shown us.”

The Myers’ pastor, Chuck Anderson of First Baptist Church of Shawmut, said the church has set up a non-tax-deductible account that he said has collected about $20,000. The money will go straight to the Myers to offset medical costs.

“This is actually going to contribute to us raising money for them for a handicap-accessible van,” Anderson said to the Chambers County Commission. “They need physical therapy for James because Medicare is not paying for it.”

To the LaFayette City Council, Anderson said Cheryl Myers is a rare person because of the individual impact she has on the lives of others.

“What I have come to know of Cheryl is that Cheryl is a giver,” Anderson said. “She gives all of her life and all of her family to those who are unfortunate and hungry.”

He said the duty of running the Christian Service Center has fallen to Cristy, who also has five school-aged children in her care.

Chambers County Probate Judge Paul Story also attended both meetings Monday night to help raise money for the Myers.

Story said the Myers have touched several families through hard times, going above and beyond to help.

“I know there are many lives that have been impacted and probably some in here that have seen the love and care they have provided,” he said to the Chambers County Commission. “This weekend is just one simple way we can give back.”

The Lanett City Council also got in on the action Monday night, reading its own proclamation making it so that every municipality in the Greater Valley Area pledged its support for the Myers family.

Lanett Police Chief Johnny Wood said the police department is donating $350 to the Myers’ fund for its No-Shave November fund.

Additionally, the Valley Lions Club donated $500 Monday during its meeting.

There are two ways to donate money to the Myers’ cause. Individuals can send a check to the First Baptist Church Shawmut at 2300 23rd Drive, Valley, AL 36854. Anderson said if the check has Myers in the memo, it will be deposited in their account. Additionally, there is a GoFundMe page titled “Miracle for the Myers Fund.” The fund as of Tuesday had more than $6,700.
