LANETT — On Saturday morning, members of Masonic lodges No. 516 in Valley and No. 656 in Lanett joined together in their annual widow’s basket program.
For close to 20 years now, the lodges have been taking part in a joint project to remember the widows of their former lodge brothers by giving them a fruit basket during the Christmas season.
“Our lodges are all about supporting families,” said Barry Smith, worshipful master of the Lanett lodge. “Our Christmas widow’s basket program is all about remembering our former lodge brothers by paying visits to their widows, giving them a basket and wishing them a merry Christmas.”
John DeNigris of Lodge No. 516 serves as the committee chair. He said that he looks forward to this each year and hopes it can continue for many years to come.
A total of 23 baskets went to widows of former lodge members in Valley and 17 went to women in Lanett. They were all delivered by noon on Saturday.
Lodge members expressed thanks to Piggy Wiggly in Lanett for help on getting the baskets together.
