With 3:33 left in the game, the Valley boys basketball team led Brewbaker Tech by two. It struggled to finish the game, scoring just six points the rest of the game, as it lost 65-62 at home on Tuesday.
“We had a chance to win the game at the end,” Valley head coach Marshon Harper said. “We just missed a couple of rebounds at the end to have a chance to shoot for the lead. My guys played hard. I’m proud of them. We’ll see [Brewbaker Tech] again in the area tournament.
The game was tight the entire 32 minutes of regulation.
The two teams traded baskets for the first three minutes of the game, as the score was 9-8 in favor of Brewbaker Tech. The quarter came to an end tied at 15.
Early in the second quarter, Valley forward Quez Trammell made a move to try and get past a defender. He crashed down hard at the same spot Anjiah Florence hit in the second quarter of the girls’ game. He left the game for a couple of minutes of the quarter, but he also returned later in the quarter.
Even with one of its best scorers out for half a quarter, the Valley Rams were able to take a one-point advantage into the halftime break.
Brewbaker started the second half hot, as it was able to outscore Valley 16-7 in the by the 3:13 mark in the third quarter. Valley started to chip away at the lead for the rest of the quarter, as it was able to convert attempts near the basket. This led to openings for jump shots, like the Kalen Sherrell drilled at the end of the third quarter as the buzzer sounded.
The 3-point shot gave Valley a one-point lead heading in to the final quarter, but they struggled down the stretch.
With a little more than two minutes left on the clock, Valley trailed 59-56. It struggled to shoot the ball, often settling for a long attempt instead of driving to the rim. Defensively, Valley got stops, but they weren’t able to corral the rebounds, giving Brewbaker Tech multiple shots on possessions. This allowed Brewbaker Tech to pull away with the win.
Valley will host Callaway on Wednesday.
