Troup County inmate dies in cell on Monday

An inmate at the Troup County Sheriff’s Office has died after committing suicide by hanging in their cell Monday afternoon.
According to TCSO, at approximately 3:15 p.m., detention officers, jail staff and other TCSO personnel immediately entry into the inmate’s cell after they were made aware of the situation. Lifesaving measures were administered by jail personnel and nursing staff. Shortly after that, fire and EMS personnel arrived and took over care of the inmate. The inmate was transported to WellStar West Georgia, where they were pronounced deceased.
According to Sgt. Stewart Smith, the inmate had been serving time at TCSO since February for a misdemeanor charge.
The inmate’s cell and the inmate housing unit were locked down and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was notified to conduct an investigation into the inmate’s death.
According to a press release, the inmate was alone in their cell at the time of the incident.
The name of the inmate is not being released pending next of kin notification.
