LANETT — The Lanett City Council will have a called meeting at 6 p.m. EST on Thursday, June 25 to fill the council vacancy created by the recent death of Shirley Motley.

“There’s a consensus among council members on what to do,” Mayor Kyle McCoy told The Valley Times-News. “Everyone loved Mrs. Motley and would not want her seat to be the source of any controversy. We can go ahead and name a successor or wait 60 days for the governor’s office to be notified and told what to do. That could mean having a special election for one seat when the regular election is Aug. 25. We thought it best to go ahead and take action now.”

The meeting should be brief. The new person will be named, sworn in and take their place on the council. A reception to honor the new member will then follow.
