The Springwood Wildcats came out in dominant fashion on Monday and handled Oaks 85-47 at home.
Springwood’s offense seemed to have everything working from the opening tipoff as the Wildcats jumped out to a 20-9 lead after one period. The Wildcats added on to that lead to take a 17-point lead into halftime.
Springwood stretched the lead out further as the Wildcats unloaded their bench in the second half. With the second unit getting most of the minutes in the second half, Springwood still outscored Oaks 42-22 in the second half.
The Wildcats were led by their big three of Daniel Westbrook, Micah Thomas and CJ Johnson. Westbrook led the way with 22 points, four rebounds and one steal. Thomas followed with 20 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and seven steals. Johnson finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
“When you that consistently are in double figures every night, that’s big,” Springwood coach Lisa Sampson said.
Springwood was without its dominant big man, Crawford Fuller, but that did not stop the Wildcats from dominating on the glass. Greg Johnson helped out on the glass with seven rebounds in the game to go along with seven points.
“Greg has really taken a leadership role and is getting in there, doing the dirty work, boxing guys out and rebounding,” Sampson said.
Springwood got a big lift from the bench on Monday as the second unit added 16 points for the cause. Jacob Burton led the second unit with seven points.
“I told them, we’ve got to have a bigger bench,” Sampson said. “That was all part of just getting more guys involved.”
The win on Monday improved the Wildcats record to 14-4 on the season. Springwood is scheduled to face Glenwood on Tuesday, but the weather could affect the status of that game. The Wildcats also face area foe Lee-Scott on Thursday.
