The Chambers County Commission approved a resolution to execute an agreement with Safe Span LLC for inspections of the bridges at railroads in the county during the Chambers County Commission meeting on Monday night.
The bridges in question are Bridge 3 on County Road 11, Bridge 87 on County Road 2, Bridge 42 on Phillips Road and Bridge 36 on County Road 278. County Engineer Josh Harvill said all the bridges span either Norfolk Southern Railway or CSX Railway.
Harvill addressed the commissioners, saying the county highway department inspects over 145 bridges in the county. Each of the bridges is inspected on a six-month, one-year or two-year rotation depending on the condition of the structure.
“Of those over 145 structures, these are the four that require specialty equipment we just simply do not have,” Harvill said.
During the work session before the meeting, Harvill said the agreement states that it would cost $3,800 for Safe Span LLC to inspect one site at a time. However, if they were to inspect all four sites in one visit, it would reduce the price to $2,185 per site.
The commission has contracted with Safe Span LLC for the last couple of years on these services, according to Harvill.
“They’re doing an excellent job. They’re coordinating their inspections well with us,” Harvill said.
