The Lanett Panthers stayed hot on the diamond on Thursday night as the Panthers downed Notasulga 3-2 at home.
Lanett’s baserunning in the game’s late stages proved to be the difference between winning and losing as Jayden Drake scored the go-ahead run for the Panthers in the bottom of the fourth inning on a wild pitch.
Notasulga started the scoring in the top of the first inning as the Blue Devils scored a run on a wild pitch.
Lanett quickly struck back in the bottom of the first inning thanks to the baserunning of Adrian Strickland. Strickland stole third before eventually scoring on a passed ball.
Braylon Chambers ripped a double into center field in the next at-bat, and then Drake came in as a pinch runner. Drake later scored on an error to put the Panthers up 2-1.
Chambers led the way at the plate for the Panthers, going 2-for-2. Adrian Strickland scored one run and walked three times.
Lanett’s offense scored in key situations, but a strong showing on the defensive side carried the Panthers. Fred Broughton got the start on the mound for the Panthers. Broughton allowed one earned run and struck out five batters in two innings of work.
Chambers came in for relief and struck out four batters and gave up two walks in two innings on the mound.
Lanett is now 2-0 on the season with wins over Notasulga and Loachapoka. The Panthers will face off against Loachapoka on the road on March 14.
