Ava Claire Scott, a sixth grader from W.F. Burns Middle School and Gabby Robles also from W.F. Burns were the two Amazing Shake overall winners of the elementary school and middle school competitions conducted this spring by the CCSD. Both students were awarded the opportunity to complete an internship experience this week in Montgomery as representatives of the Chambers County School District.
The students met Alabama House District 38 Representative, Debbie Wood who personally toured them around the state house.
While in Montgomery, the students met several representatives and lobbyists during their three-day internship experience. The students started their visit on Tuesday, April 23 and completed it on Thursday, April 25.
The students also traveled with Representative Wood to see her address the Low Income Housing Coalition on the Statehouse steps.
Both students visited with representatives of the Coalition and learned firsthand how groups can visit the Statehouse to address their own representatives about their needs.
During the internship orientation, both Scott and Robles gained insight as to how they would be serving the representatives during their legislative session.
The students served as official “Pages” whereby they would answer representatives when called upon to make copies, run errands or carry out any other needed requests.
During the lunch on Tuesday, the CCSD Amazing Shake Interns met the Alabama Speaker of the House, before beginning their internship duties.
One of the duties carried forth by Scott was to lead the House Chamber in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Both winners were in patiently in tune during the session listening to House members make their arguments over bills while they quickly responded to their “Page” duties.
