Soon, a memorial gazebo and brick path will be added to the Essie J. Handy Cemetery in honor of the late Albert Handy, who passed away on Jan. 19 of this year.
In honor of his memory, his wife and co-owner of the cemetery, Cathy Handy, received donations for the EJH Historic Cemetery Beautification Committee. For years, the committee’s goal has been to add a gazebo to the cemetery.
At last, the gazebo has been ordered and will be installed in the next 8 to 10 weeks for the cemetery; however, with the remaining funds, Cathy Handy is selling memorial bricks to run along a pathway around the gazebo.
According to LaFayette City Council member Tammie Williams, the first round of bricks were sold for $20 each. About 50 bricks have already been purchased. The next round of bricks will cost $25 each for a dedication.
The dedication is for three lines across the brick. Williams said they can be dedicated to any citizens, lost loved ones, or family members.
The deadline to purchase a brick is May 30.
