CHAMBERS COUNTY – The Alabama Department of Transportation is in the process of reconstructing I-85 at the US-29 Interchange (Exit 79). Phase 1 construction requiring the I-85 southbound Exit Ramp, US-29 Entrance Ramp to I-85 northbound, and the current detour route is nearing completion.
Weather permitting, on Thursday, April 18th, the Alabama Department of Transportation will begin Phase II construction. During this phase, asphalt will be removed from ramps & US-29. The asphalt will be replaced with concrete pavement. This work will require US-29 northbound and US-29 southbound travel lanes to be reduced to one lane, per direction. US-29 travel lanes will be shifted and the following I-85 ramps will be closed:
I-85 northbound exit ramp to US-29
US-29 entrance ramp to I-85 southbound.
A detour route utilizing I-85 and GA-18 (Exit No. 2) will be in effect during the ramp closures. This phase of the project is scheduled for approximately 6 weeks. The above-mentioned ramp closures, lane closures, and lane shifts will remain in place until completion.
Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this Construction Operation to improve Alabama’s roadways.
