LaFayette seniors took their trip across a stage set up in the middle of Bulldog Stadium, marking the end of their time at LaFayette High School. The class of 2024 celebrated their graduation at the school’s football stadium on Monday night in front of a packed crowd of friends and family.

Principal Christy Brock-Johnson began the ceremony by congratulating her graduates on their work. Brock-Johnson told the student that the class of 2024 was special to her, as they were students at John P. Powell Middle School when she transitioned from there to LaFayette High School.

Three of the students at the top of the class spoke after. De’Aundra Vines, Salutatorian Ny’aiza Linson and Valedictorian Danasia Thomas all gave speeches.

Linson used her time at the podium to tell stories of her classmates, many of whom had started school together.

“I remember when we all started at LaFayette Headstart, we barely knew each other names, and most of us have been together since then,” Linson said.

Many of the speeches also paid tribute to LHS teacher and coach, Corey Thornton, who passed away during the school year.

“[Thornton] told me that he was going to do something special for me at the end of the year. Coach Thornton will forever live in our hearts,” Linson said. Finally, Thomas ended the speeches as Valedictorian of her class.

“Some of us plan to go to college while others plan to go into the workforce. No matter which path our lives will take there will be obstacles along the way,” Thomas began. “Whatever we do, we must remember the valuable lessons we have learned here. We must keep in mind that success is determined by how we positively affect others.

After diplomas were given out to the tight-knit group, their time at LHS had ended and a new chapter began.
