LANETT — At its Monday meeting, the Lanett City Council honored some members of the Class of 2024 graduating classes from Lanett High and Springwood School.

The students recognized include the class valedictorians and salutatorians at both schools along with Mr. LHS, Miss LHS, Mr. Springwood and Miss Springwood.

LaFranco Bridges is the valedictorian and Naomi Crump the salutatorian at Lanett High. Charlie Key is a double honoree at Springwood. She’s both this year’s Miss Springwood and the class salutatorian. Lydia Camp is the 2024 valedictorian and Brayden Moseley is Mr. Springwood.

The council also congratulated four Lanett High students on having been named this year’s recipients of $2,500 scholarships from the Alabama Municipal Electric Authority (AMEA). They are LaFranco Bridges, Tyren Tiana Brooks, Mar’Kiyah Shanae Sims and Kierra Marie Trammell.

Pamela Poole, AMEA’s scholarship coordinator, contacted each student via email congratulating each one on their selection for a scholarship. The $2,500 scholarship check will be made payable to the four-year college/university, community college and/or vocational school in Alabama the student chooses.

In other action, a proclamation recognizing May as Older Americans Month was presented to Lanett Senior Center Manager Sandra Thornton and Senior Council Chairman Herschel Allen.

May was first recognized as Older Americans Month by President Lyndon Johnson in 1965. This year’s theme is “Powered by Connection” and underscores the profound impact meaningful relationships and social interaction have on our health and well-being.

Susan King was reappointed by the council to another term on the Lanett Housing Authority Board of Directors.
