J.P. Powell student shines at regional science fair

Tyler Broussard at Eastside John P. Powell Magnet School, an eighth grader, won 3rd place in the Greater East Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair (GREASF) on February 23, 2024.
She advanced to the Alabama Science and Engineering Fair (ASEF) where she competed in the junior division for middle schoolers grades 6th-8th.
Her project title: “Lights On”, Category: Robotics and Intelligent Machines. Tyler was awarded the Broadcom Award for Coding with Commitment where she received a $250 gift card and a Raspberry Pi kit.
Tyler was nominated among the top 10% from the Society-affiliated Science and Engineering Fair (ASEF). She has advanced to Broadcom Masters 2024 for competition with approximately 300 students who will apply for entrance. Broadcom Masters is a program of Society for Science, is a national science competition for U.S. middle schools.
Tyler is being coached by her Physical Science teacher Dr. Vickie Benson who is also the K-8 STEAM Specialist at East John P. Powell Magnet School.
