Mr. Jeffrey Michael “Jeff” Cook, Sr., long-time Troup County Coroner and local Funeral Director, passed away on May 12, 2024, at the age of 69. Mr. Cook was born on August 29, 1954, in LaGrange to the late Fred Bennett Cook and Lucille Arnold Cook. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Pete Cook.
Survivors include his children, Beth Antoine (Joseph), Jeff Cook, Jr., and John Cook (Peyton); sister, Margie Sturdivant; grandchildren, Isabella Antoine and Alexander Antoine; and extended family.
Jeff was a graduate of LaGrange High School, class of 1972. He was a multi-sport athlete, playing basketball, football, and baseball for the Grangers. Jeff graduated from Gupton-Jones Mortuary College in 1989, and enjoyed a 50-year career as a licensed mortician, working for funeral homes across the southeast: Harts Mortuary (Macon, GA), Reimann’s Funeral Service (Gulfport, MS), LaGrange Funeral Home (LaGrange, GA), McCarthy Funeral Home (West Point, GA), and Bluffton Funeral Home (West Point, GA). He also provided freelance embalming to a number of other funeral homes. Jeff served as Troup County Coroner for twenty years.
Away from work, Jeff enjoyed golf, cooking, and rooting for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Jeff was a prolific reader and a snazzy dresser. He had lifelong friends who he considered family. They knew they could count on him to tell a good story. Outside of his immediate family, his closest relationships were with his childhood friend, Ken Denney, and his nephew, Randy Sturdivant .
The family will have a visitation on Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Higgins Funeral Home at Hunter Allen Myhand. There will be a private graveside service at Shadowlawn Cemetery. Higgins Funeral Home at Hunter Allen Myhand, 706-884-5626.
