LifeSouth blood centers celebrating 50 years

LifeSouth Community Blood Centers is celebrating 50 years of saving lives in 2024 and its Founder’s Day on Thursday, May 30. Throughout the last 50 years, LifeSouth has remained committed to meeting the blood supply needs of hospitals and their patients by providing the highest quality services. 

LifeSouth was founded in 1974 in Gainesville, Fla. to serve locals hospitals and today the nonprofit blood bank serves more than 150 hospitals in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. In 1998, LifeSouth opened its first donor center in Montgomery, and expanded to Dothan in 2003. The first donor center in Opelika opened in 1995.  Most recently, Lifesouth opened a new donor center in Columbus, GA and is now supplying 100% of the blood products for St. Francis-Emory Healthcare and Jack Hughston Memorial.

To celebrate, a party will be held at all LifeSouth donor centers, (Montgomery, Prattville, Opelika, Dothan and Columbus) on May 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with refreshments and birthday cake. All whole blood donors will receive a $20 e-gift card and platelet and double red cell donors will receive a $40 e-gift card, plus a special recognition item. Those donating on May 30 at any LifeSouth center or bloodmobilIe will also be entered to win one of 50, $50 e-gift cards.

Donors must be at least 17 or 16 with parental permission, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good health. A photo ID is needed. Donors are always welcome to walk-in and give or visit lifesouth.org or call 1-800-795-2707 to schedule an appointment to donate.
