Pre-registration for this year’s Sylvia Word McCollough Summer Reading Program at Bradshaw Library and the LaFayette Library starts on Monday, May 13th. Participants can begin logging onto pages on Friday, May 24th.

The program gets under way at Bradshaw Library in Valley at 10 a.m. EDT on May 24th and at the LaFayette Library at noon Central Time.

Participants in both locations can check out books to earn their first Brag Tag. The Kona Ice Truck will be at the library in Valley serving free treats for registered readers from 11 a.m. till 1 p.m. ET and in LaFayette from 1 to 2 p.m. Central Time.

Participants will have the opportunity to see animals, puppet shows, magic tricks, to make and take crafts, to touch a truck and other huge vehicles, and to learn a lot in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) activities. The summer reader program helps keep school-age children engaged in learning during the summer break. The earlier one develops a love of learning, the longer they will have a true treasure that will last throughout a lifetime.

Bradshaw Library will have an evening movie early in the program and another near its conclusion. “Migration,” which is rated PG, will be shown at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 30th, and “Wonka” (PG) can be seen at 6:30 on July 12th. Everyone is invited to bring a chair or a blanket. Three food trucks, Dauro’s. Grab N Go and Mr. Frosty, will be there on those evenings. Freshly popped popcorn and soda will be available for $1.

On Friday, May 31st, a cyber game truck will be at the LaFayette Library from 1 to 3 p.m. CT. A host of games can be played on the truck including PS 4 and PS 5, Xbox X, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.

Staff from the Auburn University Raptor Center will be at Bradshaw Library at 10:30 a.m. and at the LaFayette Library at 1 p.m. CT on Tuesday, June 4th. This will give everyone a chance to see raptors like the owl, falcon, hawk, kite, vulture or eagle up close and to learn about their cultural history and the vital ecological roles they play.

Friday, June 7th will be a fun day at both libraries. It’s National Donut Day. From 8 to 10 a.m. EDT in Valley and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. CT in LaFayette, participants can come by for a free donut. Each child will receive a free book.

Saturday, June 8th will be Australia Day at Bradshaw Library. It starts at 11 a.m. EDT and involves a family fun adventure involving the sounds of a didgeridoo and the opportunity to learn about the Great Barrier Reef, Australian music, culture, comedy and its most unusual animals such as the kangaroo and the koala.

People from the McWane Center in Birmingham will be there on June 11th to take everyone on some great adventures in the world of science. Kids can learn about what it’s like to fly high above the earth in a balloon or rocket or to take a close-up look at an active volcano.

The LaFayette Library will play host to a Tween & Teen Smoothie Class on June 17th. Members of the Chambers County Extension Service will be making delicious and nutritious smoothies that day.

Tommy Johns will be doing magic shows at both libraries on June 18th. His fun show of hilarious puppets and comedy will be taking place in Valley at 10:30 a.m. ET and in LaFayette at 1 p.m. CT.

On June 20, the LaFayette Library will be the place for camping adventures. There will be camping stories being told while everyone enjoys S’mores.

Kids will be making 3D turtles at Bradshaw Library on June 27th and will have a food adventure in LaFayette the same day.

An art camp for those in grades 3 though 5 will be held at Bradshaw Library from 10:30 to 1:30 on July 8th. Registration is required.

An art adventure will take place at the LaFayette Library on July 10th. Kids will be making African-inspired arm bands that day,

The adult program schedule for the summer includes game days for grownups, a book club, one-on-one tech help and Fridays for Grown Ups.

Located at 3419 20th Avenue in Valley, Bradshaw Library is open from 10 a.m. till 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 to 1 on Saturday. The LaFayette Library is located at 198 1st Street SE in LaFayette. It’s open from noon till 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday.
