Community members came together Thursday to celebrate the newly completed pavilion project at the Chambers County Community Health and Wellness Center (CCCHWC). 

The project, sponsored by a $15,000 grant from the Coosa Valley Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council, was just the newest addition to the health and wellness center in LaFayette. 

The pavilion will be used as an additional area for informational classes for the community. RC&D representatives broke the pavilion in with a plant and seed giveaway throughout the day for the community. 

The CCCHC is a partnership between the Chambers County Commission, the city of LaFayette and Auburn University’s Rural Outreach Project. The center aims to address health disparities within rural communities by providing health and wellness information and resources.

For the past year, the center has played host to multiple health screenings manned by Auburn faculty and students, programs on health-related topics and medical care through the onsite OnMed telehealth station. 

The Coosa Valley RC&D grant was awarded last year in partnership with the city and the county for the expansion. Ciara Turner, the Coosa Valley RC&D executive director, also spoke at the event saying, “We couldn’t do what we do without the legislators.”

“Anytime we can give back to the community, we know it’s going to be a worthwhile project, to bring the community together,” said Senator Randy Price. “… We enjoy helping our rural communities.”

He added that the project in LaFayette has served as a model for other health and wellness centers around the state. 

LaFayette Street and Sanitation Superintendent George Green and his crew worked from start to finish to get it ready for the check presentation on Thursday. 

Green made the design for the pavilion and then worked alongside his crew to get it built. 

Many representatives attended the check presentation including Price, Turner, Representative Bob Fincher and James Williams, Chambers County Commission Chairman.

Other local city officials were in attendance including LaFayette Council member Toney Thomas.
