Eugene David Shelnutt Sr. (Gene) was born August 7, 1937, in Randolph County, AL.
He was son to the late Paul Shelnutt and Zera Veal Shelnutt. During his youth, Gene earned the Eagle Scout Rank which is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America. Since its inception in 1911, only 4 percent of scouts have earned this rank. Gene joined the Air Force in 1956 and served four in Savannah, GA. He married Constance Bennett in 1957, in Troup County. He entered the Federal Civil Service in 1960 and retired after 43 years of service to our country. He traveled the globe and raised a family. He touched the lives of all who knew him. He was always ready to help or lend an ear when needed without question.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Constance Bennett Shelnutt, brother Frank Shelnutt, sister Inez Roberts and eldest son Eugene (David) Shelnutt Jr.
Survivors include his brother Chester (Jan) Shelnutt, son Michael Shelnutt. Four grandchildren: Eugene (Trey) Shelnutt III (Lindsey) Shelnutt, Derek (Monica) Shelnutt, Beverly (TJ Gray) Shelnutt and Michael (Stevie West) Shelnutt Jr. Six great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.

Funeral services for Eugene will be held on Tuesday, July 30th, 2024, at 11:00 AM (EDT) at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley. Interment will follow in Johnson Memorial Gardens. Eugene’s family will receive friends for visitation Tuesday morning from 10:00 until 11:00 AM (EDT) at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley.
