The LaFayette city council made a motion to table the 17 properties that were flagged by the code enforcement officer as dilapidated houses and made a motion to get an estimate on the cost of tearing down one structure.

This comes after the council gave the property owners a 30 days to grace period to present a plan, during the Monday meeting.

Eight properties were removed from the original list due to either owners getting the power turned on, applying for a permit to tear the structure down or other reasons.

Code Enforcement Officer Kim Langley said that the process for identifying and adding a property to the list of dilapidated properties is so long.

Many owners get the power turned back on in the meantime and then must be taken off the list.

During the meeting, Council member David Ennis asked Langley to give the specified reasons for the properties being dropped.

In the last meeting where the houses were discussed, Street and Sanitation Superintendent George Green estimated that it would cost around $5,000 for the city to tear down one dilapidated structure.

During the meeting, the council members agreed to table the resolution on the structures until the city attorney could get an estimate on tearing down one of the houses. With that estimate, they can decide where to go from there.
