Lucy Lindsay

Lucy Eloise G. Lindsay, age 98 ½ of Valley, Alabama, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2024, at Bethany House in Auburn, surrounded by her family. Having lived in Fairfax, AL (now Valley) since July 1963, Eloise spent her last four years “at home” at Lakewood Senior Living of Valley, Alabama.

Born December 26, 1925, in Centralhatchee, Georgia, Eloise was the oldest of six children to parents James Ezra Gladney and Lydia Louisa Nutt Gladney. She was Valedictorian of her high school class at Franklin. Her father Ezra Gladney served as Sheriff in Heard County and the Gladney family lived in the downstairs quarters of the jail for several years. She is survived by two sisters, Marvis G. Jones of Newnan, Georgia and Betty Jane Turner of LaGrange, Georgia.

Eloise is survived by her five children, Pat Hafner Stovall of Dalton, Georgia, Douglas (Pam) Lindsay of Lake Harding, Alabama, Dennis (Susan) Lindsay of Lanett, Becky (Larry) Sharpe of Lanett, and Jean (Curt) Andrews of Two Rivers, Wisconsin. She was loved dearly by 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

On June 29, 2008, Eloise was preceded in death by her precious husband of 64 years, John W. Lindsay, Jr., and they now celebrate a heavenly anniversary sixteen years later. Engraved in both their wedding bands is the Hebrew word “Mizpah” which means “May God watch over you while we are apart”. We are so very thankful that God did just that for Mama for so many healthy years following Daddy’s death!

Partners in life, and in business, John and Eloise worked together 40+ years running their own janitorial supply business, Southern Sanitary Company. One of their sons, Dennis, took this business over when they retired.

John and Eloise were faithful members of Langdale Congregational Christian Church for many years, and Eloise served as the church Treasurer until age 90. She also was responsible for changing the church sign and message weekly and took great pride in this accomplishment.

Eloise served as an election official for Chambers County for many years until John’s health declined. Her daughter Jean is honoring her mother by doing this also in Two Rivers. She shares at each election why she chooses to serve.

John and Eloise enjoyed many retirement years as members of the Valley Vagabonds camping club, as well as traveling across the United States in motorhomes with her sister Marvis and brother-in-law Walter.

Funeral services for Eloise were held on Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024, at 11:00 AM (EDT) at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley. Interment followed in Fairfax Cemetery. The Reverend Chuck Goodwin officiated.
