There is a new superintendent for the Troup County School System. Dr. Rachel Hazel was sworn into the role during a special called school board meeting on Monday.
All board members were present, some of the newly elected board members who will take office next year, TCSS educators and other community members also showed up.
Judge Michael Key of the Juvenile Court of Troup County, administered the oath of office for Hazel as board members and a full board room looked on.
Once the oath was sworn, a smiling Hazel addressed the audience.
“I’ve had the pleasure of being in education for almost 30 years and before that, I was a student in education,” Hazel said. “This is probably the biggest honor that I’ve ever had; to serve in a district that loves children and believes that children really are the future.”
The former Florida educator and Coweta County native continued, “I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and working side by side with you. I appreciate those of you who are here. Thank you for being here because the biggest part when we’re serving the public is showing up.”
“It is an exciting time for the Troup County school system,” said Brandon Brooks, Board Chairman. “We look forward to the days and weeks and years to come as we continue on that track record of positive improvement, of student success. And that is only possible with the help of everybody in the room.”
A meet and greet with members of the public, with food and drinks, followed the short ceremony. The community was then able to meet and talk to Hazel about the work ahead.
