VALLEY — The City of Valley has adopted a street improvement plan for the next five years. Action was taken on this at Monday’s council meeting.

A total of 19 city streets are on the list. The streets will be resurfaced over the next five years at a cost of a little more than $2 million.

Major projects over the next five years will include the portion of 49th Street off of 55th Street, which should cost close to $290,000; 16th Avenue in Shawmut, just under $190,000; 31st Street in Shawmut, just under $150,000; the portion of 21st Avenue north of Fob James Drive, $140,000; Lanier Street in Fairfax, approximately $135,000; Middle Street in River View, $127,000; the portion of 26th Avenue north of 55th Street, $125,000; the boat ramp road and GI Street, both in River View, close to $115,000 each, and Margarite Street, $100,000.

Other streets on the list include a portion of Whitesmill Road, a little more than $80,000; the portion of 32nd Street from Highway 29 to 18th Avenue, $75,000; the portion of 21st Avenue that runs south of Fob James, $65,000; 30th Street, $48,000; the portion of 15th Avenue to a cul-de-sac, $43,000; Library Street, $37,000; the portion of 26th Avenue that runs south of Fob James, $36,000, and the portion of 26th Avenue between 49th and 50th streets, $34,000.

The goal is to have all of these streets paved over the next five years.

The council recognized members of the Valley Swim Team. Long-time swim coach Bobby Poer told the council that 24 of the team’s 31 members qualified for the recent Alabama Recreation & Parks Association

(ARPA) state swim meet in Opelika. The

Raylee Meacham, Piper Hines and Ella Kate Jones finished second in the District meet and fourth in the State. Poer commended Carley Turner on having done an outstanding job of coaching the team this year.

Members of the team receiving certificates were Finley Ruth Hooks, Brittlyn Jackson, Luke Roberts, Cerina Sanchez, Melaina Sanchez, Becklyn Powell, Selah Pearl Hooks, Raylee Meacham, Bryleigh Jackson, Maggie Jo Rennie, Carter Powell, Drew Leak, Lily Roberts, Ella Kate Jones and Bryce Powell. Members of the team who were unable to attend were Chase Fuller, Olivia Fuller, Maxine Lawson Boothby, Oliver Lawson Boothby, Khloe Mangram, Asa Williams, Jacob Wooley, Piper Hines and Sadie-Anne Hackney.

Mayor Leonard Riley thanked members of the team on having represented the city well this year, both in the District and at the State meet. “It takes lots of hard work to do well in any competitive event,” he said. “I want to thank you for doing that and to thank your parents and grandparents on supporting you the way they have.”

A Class II (package) lounge retail liquor license was approved for a business known as Old Ones and Cold Ones. It’s located at 5005 20th Avenue in Valley. Its owners are Joseph Kevin Cooley of LaGrange and Anne Jennelle Cooley of Decatur, Georgia.

The meeting began with a public hearing to determine the cost of abating two properties in the city. Contractor C.H. Hall did the work at both sites. The cost to clean up a site on Cusseta Road came to just under $20,000 when the legal fees were added. A site on GI Street in River View costs $5,500. The city can place liens on the property owners to recover these costs.

The council took action to do that in a five-item consent agenda that was unanimously approved. The consent agenda also determined a public nuisance and authorized action to clean up another site on GI Street.

In another item on the consent agenda, the city amended the budget to include an insurance recovery in the amount of $5,906.34.

This covered the repair cost of a city-owned vehicle that was insured.
