Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Point University football is back. The Skyhawks started fall camp on Thursday as they gear up for the fast-approaching 2024-2025 season.

The team’s first game is away against Bethel (TN) on Aug 31. Head coach Trevor Zeider said the late start to practice means the players will have to work that much harder to get ready for game one.

“We haven’t had the opportunity to be together all summer. So that’s the one thing that frustrates me…we just all came in on Monday,” Zeiders said.

The coach added, “We’re making strides but there’s still so much that we’ve gotta get up to speed with…Once we really start settling in, there’ll be a hierarchy and reps and who’s getting what, and hopefully they can develop more chemistry as we continue to move forward.”

A plus side is the Skyhawk’s defense. Many of the starters are returning and for the positions needing to be filled, there are guys with experience ready to step up.

“Defensively, we pretty much knew the guys that we had. Those same ones are making the plays right now,” Zeiders said, pointing out players like sophomores, Caleb Wade (DB), and Ethan Binns (LB).

The offensive side of the ball is young and still needs to find its footing. The Quarterback position saw five guys throw passes last season. Zeiders said the job is once again up for grabs.

“It’s an open job right now. We won’t even make any decisions anywhere remotely close until we are starting to prepare for Bethel,” he said. “They’ve got three weeks to kind of show us what they can do…but there’s a lot of stuff we got to see because right now we’ve not been very accurate and [we have been] leaving a lot of things on the table.

Although it is still early in camp, Zeiders has identified some of the offensive playmakers. Some of the young players having a good camp so far are freshman running back Nick Farrow and wide receivers Jordan Green, a freshman, and Jordan Posey, a junior.

There has been significant coaching turnover since last season. However, Zeiders said he is impressed with the new staff.

“I’m loving the energy [the new coaches] are bringing, they’re all bringing a ton of energy. There’s a lot going on, and it’s helping all of us. I think it energizes the kids,” he said.

Zeiders’s main goal this season is to achieve the elusive winning record for the school.

“That’s one of the biggest ones; to be the first time in point history…it would be the first true winning season in the university’s history,” Zeider said, apart from the year point had to vacate the Sun Conference championship due to an ineligible player in 2015.

He continued, “Second, just continuing to improve overall, I mean, right now we’re 4-7, but that’s not our standard.”
