11:00 a.m. ET Tropical Storm Helene check-in

Published 10:42 am Thursday, September 26, 2024

According to a 7 a.m. release from the Chambers County EMA, no significant changes were made to the forecast of Hurricane Helene. Rain will become widespread across eastern portions of the area throughout the day with winds increasing this evening. Most of the impacts from the wind and rain will be focused across the eastern half of the forecast area in which downed trees could result in power outages, and heavy rainfall could result in significant flash flooding.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham predicts Helene will make landfall Thursday evening. Currently, there is no threat of tornados forming. However, tonight into Friday could see wind gusts up to 40 to 50 miles per hour. Tropical force winds are projected to move into Eastern Alabama between 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. CT.

Rain will increase in strength throughout the day. NWS projects 3 to 8 inches of rain over the next couple of days. With this comes the potential for significant flooding.
