Chambers Academy had a fun Friday night as they returned home after three away games. The rebels beat Edgewood 37-7, in a masterclass on both sides of the ball

The first quarter saw 23 points on the board. Landon Hand got the scoring started a few minutes in with a QB run. Luke Tarver punched it in for two more points.

The next drive was all Hand. A pair of long rushes saw the quarterback to the endzone with 3:40 seconds left in the quarter. Just for fun, he scored the two-point conversion to make it 16-0.

The defense played lights out. During an Edgewood drive, TJ Daniels decided he wanted the ball. The linebacker went up for an Edgewood pass, intercepting it on the away team’s 20-yard line.

After the turnover, Hands pass to Eli Horton, who is back from injury, got the ball to the 4. Tarver once again got through Edgewood’s D-Line for a touchdown. Cameron Gooden caught for the two-point conversion to make it 23-0.

The productive first quarter ended with a big defensive stop by Wharton.

A 91-yard drive by a host of Rebels got the ball downfield. TJ Daniels walked the ball in thanks to good blocking with seven minutes left in the half.

With a comfortable 30-0 lead Chambers did not sit on their heels. A blocked punt by Drew Sheppard gave the home team the ball back on Edgewood’s 32-yard line. Daniels once again used his speed to get Chambers’s final touchdown of the night.

The third quarter would be a stalemate with both defenses getting to flex their muscles. Edgewood had a chance after intercepting a pass from Hand, but it was not to be.

The fourth was a tad more eventful. Edgewood finally got on the board in the fourth quarter with a 20-yard pass down the side to make it 37-7.

Backup quarterback Hunter Andrew got some snaps in the last few minutes of the game. The Rebels ran the clock down to get their first home win of the season.

“I thought we were very physical. we ran the ball well,” said Jason Allen, Chamber’s head coach. “Our quarterback really got loose on the backside, and I thought that kind of opened the game up. They were really keen on Luke Tarver and our tailbacks, and we did a good job of figuring that out and making some adjustments,” Allen added.

After a long road trip to start the season, Allen said, “It was a good win. It was great to be at home.”

Chambers will play on the road again next week against Bessemer Academy on Sept. 20.
