The Chambers County Commission approved a contract renewal for the Chattahoochee Humane Society during this week’s commission meeting. The contract will be renewed for one year starting Oct. 1 for the same amount of $6,458.34 per month.
The contract ensures that the county is provided eight kennels every seven days as state law mandates a seven-day hold on stray animals. Though the monthly payment will remain the same, some changes were made to the contract this year.
For one thing, animal control officers who pick up a stray animal that has sustained a serious bodily injury must take the animal to the veterinarian for treatment before it can be surrendered to the shelter.
That vet fee will be the responsibility of the county or city that picks up the animal. Commission Chairman James Williams said that the change comes due to the volume of city animal control officers who have brought dogs to the shelter that have been recently hit by a car.
