Anyone driving down 20th Avenue in Valley on Tuesday might have noticed a jail cell erected in front of Renasant Bank. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the bank and Chambers County Sheriff’s Office hosted the eighth annual Cuff for a Cure.

“We have fun every year,” said Valley Renasant Manager Nancy Warren-Holland.

Cuff for a Cure began under the tenure of the former sheriff, Sid Lockhart, who was a breast cancer survivor. Since his retirement in 2022, the county’s new sheriff, Jeff Nelson, has promised to continue the tradition. Willing inmates are “jailed” outside of the bank until they can raise their bail money. 

All the proceeds for the event go to the Breast Cancer Research Center of Alabama, which funds Alabama-based breast cancer research. The bail is set at $100.

Though neither Lockhart or Nelson could be there on Tuesday, Sheriff Deputy Mike Parrish and several other officers from the county and Valley Police Department stopped by to support the event. 

Parrish spent some time in the clinker with Rambo, the Valley High School Ram mascot. Even Paul Story, Chambers County Probate Judge, spent some time in the jail cell on Tuesday morning. 

“It’s a testimony of the residents of Valley,” Warren-Holland said. “They always show up and show out whenever there’s a need.”

The Curry Man and Grab-N-Go food trucks were also onsite during the event. 

The Cuff for a Cure is just one of the events that Renasant Bank does throughout the month to raise money. Already the Valley office has raised $1,000 toward their goal. Warren-Holland said their goal every year is to exceed the year before, which they have for the past two years.

Another event later this month will be pie-to-the-face for an employee. The staff member who gets the most donations will get a pie in the face.
