The color pink filled the streets of downtown Lanett in front of the city’s fountain on the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Team WHIP marked the day with The Light Up the Pink event, holding a commemorative balloon release and a fellowship of survivors and “co-survivors” as founder Narfunda Ross would say.
Team WHIP is a local nonprofit that supports breast cancer survivors through fellowship, education and financial support. Ross invited the city of Lanett, partners of Team WHIP, to come out and celebrate the month of October.
Before the balloon release which commemorates those lost to breast cancer, Ross and other Team WHIP members spoke about the organization, the nature of survivorship and the importance of early detection.
“If you were diagnosed yesterday and you’re still alive, you’re a survivor,” Ross said during the event.
She spoke about being “CEO of your health,” taking control of your health.
Angela Houston spoke about the importance of knowing your genes. Genetic testing through BRCA1 and BRCA2 tests can help give you more insight into genes that make you predisposed to develop breast cancer.
According to Houston, 5-10 percent of breast cancers are hereditary. It’s just another great tool for preventative health and early detection.
“You need to be proactive about it so you can take control of your health,” Houston said.
Ross also encouraged survivors to acquaint themselves with the “power within.” She reminded survivors not to let themselves be defined by their diagnosis.
“Don’t let what you are scared of be your death,” Ross said.
“I pray that God will continue to bless you,” said Lanett Mayor Jamie Heard. “Thank you all for bringing this to Lanett and anytime we can help, let us know.”
Team WHIP also provides monetary support for those recently diagnosed and those undergoing treatment. That fund is supported through donations and fundraisers. WHIP’s primary event throughout the year is its annual Health Walk, which this year upgraded to Health Fest.
The event will be held on Oct. 19 at the Valley Sportsplex. Registration can be done at TeamWHIP2015.com for cars, jeeps, Spyders or motorcycles. Ross said that all cancer survivors, not just breast cancer, are invited to come out for the walk.
“That’s what survivorship is about,” she said.
