WEST POINT LAKE – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ West Point Project is now accepting discarded Christmas trees for recycling at three locations near West Point Lake. This will be taking place through January 7, 2025.

On the Alabama side of the lake, trees may be taken to the boat ramp area at Rocky Point Park. In Georgia, they can be taken to two locations of LaGrange, one near the boat ramp at Yellow Jacket Creek Park and another site at Sunny Point Park.

The donated trees will be used to make brush piles in the lake. This is known to improve fish habitat.

Artificial trees will not be accepted. Make sure all the decorations have been removed before taking a tree to one of these sites.

Individuals who place trees in the lake are asked to follow the following safety guidelines:

4 Do not place trees in areas where they could potentially become safety hazards to boaters or swimmers. Don’t leave them near boat launching areas, shallow boat channels or swimming areas.

4 Use a suitable anchoring method to prevent the trees from floating away or moving around. A cement block will work well as an anchor for one or two trees but must be securely fastened to the tree using nylon twine or similar material.

4 Trees will attract more fish if they are placed in deeper water and in an area where the water depth changes significantly, such as near an underwater ridge or hump. Fish tend to use this type of area throughout the year.
