DECEMBER 3rd, 2024At approximately 11:40 AM on December 3rd, Lagrange Fire Department and Troup County Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 830 Piney Woods Drive.

Upon arrival, emergency responders learned from 911 dispatch that there was a fire in the basement, and a woman was trapped inside. Fortunately, the woman was rescued from a window by her husband before fire crews arrived.

When LFD Engine 1 reached the scene, they observed heavy smoke billowing from the front of the single-story residential structure, which included a full walk-out basement. An attack line was deployed, and additional support was provided by E-3, which pulled another line for fire suppression. The Shift Commander, assessing the situation, determined that approximately 75% of the first floor was involved in the fire and called for defensive operations.

Engine 5 arrived to secure utilities and assist with establishing a water supply, while Engine 4 brought additional lines for fire attack. Troup County Fire Department Truck 1 also joined in the suppression efforts, with two more TCFD units called for additional staffing support.

The resident reported that he heard his smoke detector go off and discovered a small fire under the stairs leading to the basement. After attempting to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher and then a water hose, he realized the fire had grown too large. The female occupant was treated for minor cuts from broken glass after her escape and was released. The other occupant declined medical treatment. Thankfully, there were no other injuries reported.

The area of origin for the fire was identified as being under the staircase, and while the exact cause remains undetermined, electrical issues have not been ruled out.

The pre-incident value of the structure was estimated at $267,900, and it has been deemed a total loss.
