After the Lanett JV boys team won a back-and-forth game, the Varsity squad played the final game of the night. It was the LaFayette side that prevailed, beating their cross-county rivals 66-38 in an electric home game.

It was ultra-competitive in the first half, with both teams knowing the importance of the win. They were at the top of their game, swapping points and playing aggressive defense.

The momentum yo-yoed in the second quarter. As the final seconds counted down LaFayette sunk a three-pointer pushing their lead to 33-22 at the half.

The Bulldogs were the better team in the second half, consistently finding routes to the basket. Lanett had trouble piercing LaFayette inside. The fourth quarter saw a different Lanett. They struggled to make much happen offensively, with only a Shamar Patterson three-pointer in the final quarter.

The crowd seemed to be competing as hard as the players in the fourth, despite a lopsided score. Both side’s cheerleaders were in fine form as they attempted to outdo each other.

In the end, the Varsity boy’s game went to LaFayette thanks to a dominant second half. The Bulldogs won 66-38, opening the area play 1-0. Lanett falls to 0-1 in the area.

Patterson led the Panthers in scoring, with 14 points. Fred Broughton scored three three-pointers in the first half for nine on the night.

LaFayette had success on both sides of the arc and the free-throw line. The team had nearly everyone getting on the scoreboard and had great shot selection. Quintavious Lloyd led the team with 15 points, largely from aggressive plays inside.  Jordan Johnson had luck all over the court, sinking two threes, a couple of jumpers, and two from the line, to put up 13 points. Jayden Thomason followed with eleven points, mostly in the second half.

The teams will meet again on Jan. 17 in Lanett.
