Chambers County is expected to get the coldest snap of the season this weekend. According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, an arctic air mass will move in on Sunday evening, by Monday morning temperatures could plummet into the teens and the wind chill making it feel colder. The cold weather is expected to last until around Wednesday.
The NWS reported the wind chills could become dangerous and asked residents to take necessary precautions. They advise bringing pets inside, protecting pipes by letting them drip and keeping space heaters away from anything.
Monday and Tuesday are expected to see temperatures drop as low as 11 to 19 degrees with wind-cold in the single digits. It could stay below freezing until Thursday.
The current models, however, this could change in the coming days, are trending towards snow in Central Alabama sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
Should it snow, impacts could be significant. With low temperatures for a few days, the snowfall may not melt for a couple of days. It is too early to see how much accumulation, but the NWS suggests snowfall is most likely along the south of I-10, with the heaviest to be south of U.S. 80 from Montgomery to Opelika.
The Chambers County EMA/911 Center is regularly posting updates from the NWS and other local agencies. VTN will continue to update as information becomes available.
