In light of the winter weather advisory, Powell Chapel United Methodist Church in LaFayette, Alabama will be open as a warming center for tonight and tomorrow. Happy Valley Baptist Church will also open upon request.

LaFayette Fire Chief Jim Doody said that the church will be set up as a warming station for anyone who may need to stop by. He advised that even if you don’t see any cars outside, you should still come inside and get warm.

Lanett Mayor Jamie Heard said if the police department receives any calls asking for help, the city will open a facility as a warming center as well.

The county has been declared in a state of emergency by the Alabama governor as of 1 p.m. CST on Thursday. Though the city of Valley has kept the community center open in the past, Valley Mayor Leonard Riley said it will not be open unless they receive a call asking for shelter from the cold.

The National Weather Service of Birmingham and Chambers County 911 & EMA have continued to provide updates on the coming weather. The most recent update, received at 8 a.m. Thursday, issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Chambers County on Friday from 12 a.m. to 3 p.m.

During this estimated time, a mixture of rain, snow, sleet and light freezing rain is expected initially, with mainly snow and sleet north of this line in areas south of Tuscaloosa to Alexander City to the West Point Lake line and beyond.

The morning commute will likely be impacted in parts of the county.

Though the northern part of the state will have the most impact, some road impacts are expected for Chambers County. Between 1-2 inches of snow is forecasted for the county as well.

Temperatures will warm a couple degrees above freezing during the day, with precipitation changing over to rain across much of the area by midday, according to the NWS.

Any residents of the county in need of shelter from the cold should call their local police department or 911 center as soon as possible to avoid the icy chills Thursday night and Friday morning.
