The Wildcats got their fifth win in a row on Tuesday night. Springwood beat region foe Southern Prep 88-31.
The game started off with a bang when Gio Rowe dunked on the Wildcats first possession. That would set the tone for the game. Rowe had a spectacular night on both offense and defense, using his big frame to eat up Southern Prep’s rebounds.
“We really wanted to improve on our full-court press, and for the most part, we did [that],” said head coach Lisa Sampson. “We felt playing them aggressively was the way to go. And, yeah, just really proud of the way we played.”
Springwood came out of the gate pressing Prep’s offense forcing turnovers. When turned over the team would feed Rowe, CJ and Greg Johnson under the net. On the rare occasions Prep was there first they would pass out to Kori Key or Clarence Moore to score behind the arc. They finished their monster first frame with 32 points.
Prep seemed to make a few more of those quick passes to maneuver the press in the second, but the Wildcat’s offense and rebounding held strong. It ended how it started, with a bang as James Do scored a buzzer-beater three to end the half 58-22.
The second half was much of the same, even as the starters got a rest. The defense stepped up even more, holding Prep to a combined nine points in the half.
Rowe led the scoring with 22 points. However, he was not the only offensive star of the night. CJ scored 16, while his brother Greg was close behind with 15 points, Moore had 14 and Key 10.
The Wildcats improve to 9-5 on the season and 3-0 in region play. They return on Thursday taking on Southern Prep on the road.
“We’ve got to go to southern prep on Thursday, and then Saturday we play Valiant Cross, who’s the number one team in the state,” said Sampson. “We’ve just got to focus on continuing to improve who we are as a team and it starts through defense and rebounding and just executing offensively the plan.”
