The undisputed number one in AISA girls basketball is Springwood. They proved that on Friday night against county rival, Chambers Academy. The Wildcats bumped their record up to 16-0, 3-0 in the area, after beating the Rebels __.
Chambers has had an up-and-down season and are 0-3 in the region, currently sitting at third in the standings.
The first quarter showed a stronger Chambers side than the last time the two teams met. Unfortunately for the Rebels, Springwood also looked stronger.
Springwood looks like a complete team. Even with standout scorers like Little and Patillo, they move the ball around like a unit. The Wildcats were able to get the ball inside for quick baskets and find each other on transitions.
Chambers struggled to move the ball but had some success shooting from the outside and getting up for rebounds.
Madison Stanford seemingly gave the Rebels momentum going into the second quarter when she sunk a buzzer-beater from behind the arc to bring the score to 18-8.
Springwood got crisper in the second and would push their lead out to 30-15 by the half.
The Rebels slowed down in the third. Springwood went on to outscore them 14-4 in the quarter. The fourth was much of the same, as Springwood cruised to their 16th win of the season.
Stanford was the Rebels top scorer, putting up seven points, six of which came off of three-pointers. Olivia Daughtry got four points on the night.
Springwood’s Lex Little scored her season average of 22 points on Friday. Tori Patillo followed that up with 12 points as the only other Wildcat to break double digits. Five other wildcats got on the score sheet.
Springwood will return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 27 when they take on region opponent Macon East at home. Chambers will also play Macon East next, they play in LaFayette on Jan. 30.
