The West Point City Council met for the first time in 2025. During a work session on Tuesday night, the city had a public comment, announcements and set the agenda for next week’s business meeting.
Private citizen Chris Cagle spoke during the period for public comment.
“There’s so many dog owners here in West Point, I just thought I would come before the council and see if I could ask y’all to look into the possibility of building a dog park,” Cagle said. “Past the initial expense of building the park, it doesn’t have to be manned…other than cutting the grass that is all you have to do.”
Mayor Steve Tramell said that the council would take it under advisement.
City Manager Ed Moon gave his report. The city contracted with the county for early voting services in November. West Point saw more early voters, 496, than it did on election day, 401. In total, 52 percent of the West Point voters turned out for the primary election.
He also announced that the company Tyco donated $10,000 to the city’s Recreation Department.
This year is a municipal election year. The council has to set the qualifying fee for candidates running in the election. In Troup County, the fee has been three percent of the position’s annual salary. For a council member, the fee would be $151.20.
The riverfront trail project passed another hurdle. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources received federal approval from the highway administration to move forward on extending the trail next to the city hall. The project will cost $306,000. $200,000 will come from grant funding, with a $106,465 match.
The items up for approval during the business meeting on Jan. 13 at 5:30 ET are appointments of city officers, qualifying fees and an agreement between the city with Georgia DNR.
