LANETT — The Springwood School soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season after defeating Eastwood Christian 5-2 on Tuesday evening.
“Conditions weren’t great tonight,” Springwood head soccer coach John Lanier said. “It was really rainy tonight, it was cold and muddy. It was good to see the guys give 100 percent effort and get the win.”
Springwood led 3-0 in the first half after goals by Kannon Key and two from Coleman Hull. Hull finished with a hat trick on Tuesday night after scoring four goals in last week’s season-opener at Macon East.
“I really think it’s just been my teammates leading me on,” Hull said. “Six of the goals that I’ve scored have been on assisted passes. They’re making it easy for me with one-touch finishes once it gets to the back line. It’s definitely been them that helped me score seven goals in two games.”
Springwood junior Jonah Kelley struck in the Wildcats’ fourth goal of the match from deep at the 32:25 mark in the second half.
Defensively, Springwood allowed two goals in the second half, including one in the final minute while holding to a 5-1 lead.
“Playing defense in these conditions is a little more difficult,” Lanie said. “I thought the guys played well and they rebounded well. We still have some things to work on, but overall they’re playing well defensively.”
The Wildcats carried high hopes into this season, but Lanier said he understands the road the team has remaining.
“Just take it one game at a time,” Lanier said before cracking a smile in response to his team’s lofty expectations for the season. “We have a home game next Tuesday so we’ll worry about that one, try to find a way to win that one and then we’ll see where it goes.”
Before next Tuesday’s home match against Lyman Ward, Springwood travels to Northside Methodist on Friday.
