FREDONIA — Three winners have been named in the Five Points School 2019 essay contest conducted by the Fredonia Heritage Association.

What is not yet known is their ranking — first, second or third place.

The top three are Madyson Fuzzell, sixth grade, and Molly McGourik and Kylie Morgan, both seventh grade.

Their ranking will be announced at a celebratory dinner at 6 p.m. EST on Saturday, March 9 at the Fredonia Community House and hosted by the Fredonia Heritage Association. First place carries a $100 cash award; second place, a $60 award; and third place, $40.

The dinner recognizes the winning students, as well as volunteers who worked at Fredonia Heritage Day last November and who supported the Association’s activities through the year.

The theme of Heritage Day each year serves as the topic for that year’s essay contest. Since last November’s theme focused on the people of Fredonia, the essay contest asked participants to write about an individual who had impacted his or her life.

The theme is in keeping with the current three-year celebration of the bicentennial celebration. The first year saluted “Our Place,” this past year hailed “Our People,” and the final year will feature “Our Stories.”

A total of nine Five Points students in grades 6-8 undertook the challenge. “They all did a really good, thorough job,” George Barrow, contest chair for Fredonia Heritage said.
