LANETT — Then there were five.

Lanett High School rising senior and four-star prospect Kristian Story announced the top five schools of where he was considering to play college football on Sunday morning.

“I would like to say thank you to all of the colleges that have been recruiting me,” Kristian wrote in his announcement via social media. “My recruiting has been a blessing, however, at this time I have decided to focus on these five schools.”

In alphabetical order, the University of Alabama, Louisiana State University (LSU), Notre Dame, the University of Tennessee and Texas A&M made the list. He has decided to make his final decision on his 18th birthday, which is Oct. 5.

Two schools remain a constant on most of Kristian’s lists throughout the recruiting process- Alabama and Tennessee. Story has previously said that he grew up an Alabama fan. Despite his childhood fandom, Lanett head football coach and Kristian’s father Clifford Story, Jr. has previously said that his being a fan doesn’t guarantee commitment.

Kristian originally verbally-committed to Tennessee in March 2018 as a sophomore. He decided to re-open his options in September 2018 because he said that he felt like he made his decision too early.

He previously expressed his desire to play quarterback at the next level, but Coach Story said that Kristian has now told coaches that “he just wants to play football” on recent visits.

“He feels like he can be an asset to any program that he chooses,” Coach Story said. “Whether it’s on offense or defense.”

Last season as the Panthers’ starting quarterback, Kristian completed 102-of-145 pass attempts for 1828 yards with 36 touchdowns and six interceptions through Lanett’s nine regular season games. As a defensive back, Kristian made 55 tackles, recovered two fumbles, grabbed six interceptions and two pick-sixes.

Kristian has officially visited all of the aforementioned schools with the exception of Texas A&M, where he’ll visit this summer.

Kristian previously said that he was going to make his decision before the first Lanett regular season game this fall, but pushed it back to his birthday to make sure he’s making the correct decision.

“By extending it, he doesn’t want to cut himself short by not getting the full picture of wherever he decides to go,” Coach Story said. “If it comes down to him being undecided [by the start of the season], it gives him a chance to check it out again, have another conversation with the coach or something that can enlighten his mindset. He doesn’t want to force himself to say ‘I’m going to just do it this summer.’ He wants to take his time to have the summer plus one official visit in once fall starts.”

Kristian has been ranked as the No. 1 athlete in the state of Alabama for the class of 2020. He was the starting quarterback on the 2017 AA state championship team at Lanett his sophomore season. Coach Story previously said that Kristian plans on enrolling into college early next spring wherever he decides to play.
