MONTGOMERY — The Springwood soccer team’s season came to an end on Thursday night in a 2-0 state semifinal loss to Glenwood.
“It’s amazing the foundation that was laid last year, and then these guys taking it to the final four,” Springwood head soccer coach John Lanier said. “I’m extremely proud of them for what they’ve accomplished this year. Winning the region, getting to the final four, the way they came together as a team. As a family, they came together for one another, it was amazing to see.”
In the program’s second year since remerging, Springwood has made the playoffs both seasons, losing in the first round last year to eventual state-champion Autauga Academy.
“Each year, they’re making progress,” Lanier said. “The foundation that each senior class has laid for the next group to take it another step forward.”
Lanier said that while Thursday’s loss was tough for the team’s six seniors of Thomas Beall, Charles Cowart, Trent Craft, Jake Thrailkill, Eric Fuller and Mitchum Smith, the overall message that teammates and coaches had for each other was how proud they were of each other pulling together as a team this season and becoming a family of sorts.
Springwood is expected to return leading-striker Coleman Hull, Jonah Kelley and Jack Brown next season.
