WEST POINT LAKE — The weather wreaked havoc with local Easter egg hunts that were planned for Saturday. One was too wet, and another unusually cool.

The community egg hunt that was planned for Langdale Meadow across from the First Baptist Church had to be canceled due to the Meadow being flooded Saturday morning. This is a long-time problem experienced along Moore’s Creek after heavy rain, and we had some of that late Friday night and early Sunday morning.

The annual Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Easter egg hunt at Rocky Point Park went off as scheduled at 2 p.m. EDT Saturday afternoon, but the turnout was noticeably smaller than normal, almost certainly due to the rain and the cool weather that followed.

Over 2,200 eggs, some of them boiled and some of them plastic, were scattered over a grassy area inside one of the park’s cul de sacs. Children three years of age and under were allowed to gather eggs inside a roped-off area at center. Youngsters in the 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12 age groups were allowed to hunt eggs in roped off areas across the road and near the lake.

Representing lodge No. 20, Chambers County Fraternal Order of Police were Mike Reynolds, Jason Fuller, Stacy Shirey, M.J. Jones, Mike Cox, and A.J. Hadaway, who wore a bunny suit to the event.

The local chapter has been hosting Easter egg hunts as far back as the 1970s. They were in Langdale Meadow in the early years and then switched to the park areas surrounding West Point Lake following the lake’s impoundment in 1975. Most of the hunts have taken place in Rocky Point Park, just across the Alabama-Georgia state line, but others have been held in Anderson Park near the dam and Veasey Creek Park.
