The Troup County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an apparent drowning on Monday morning near the Cameron Mill Road bridge.
The sheriff’s office is on the scene, searching for a 34-year-old black male from Jonesboro who went under the water around midnight and did not resurface, according to Sgt. Stewart Smith. Smith said the case is currently being investigated as a drowning.
The man and his father were sleeping on their boat Sunday night, and the father woke up, thought he was at home and got up to walk to the restroom. When he did, he fell into the water, according to Smith.
The son jumped in the water to save his dad and did not resurface. There were some boaters 20 to 30 feet away who helped get the dad back in his boat, but the son was not found. The father was taken to West Georgia Medical Center and has been released.
The Department of Natural Resources and Corps of Engineers are currently on the scene. Yellow Jacket Creek Park is currently closed.
